Welcome to our first monthly reading wrap up! We thought we would share what we read in January, we read a whole variety of things – including romance, thrillers & non-fiction. There is something for everyone.

READ IN JANUARY..

RESCUE ME BY SARRA MANNING // LINK

We follow Margot & Will who both want to adopt the same rescue dog, Blossom & they share custody. It is every bit as cute & wholesome as it sounds. I loved the two characters so much, their snarky banter at the beginning that slowly develops into more. Their developing relationship is one of the best i’ve read in a romance. It wasn’t rushed at all and you saw their feelings grow organically, which I really appreciated. The book does tackle slightly deeper topics such as childhood trauma & the whole “i’m getting to old & my eggs will be all dried up” stigma that surrounds being a SLIGHTLY older woman. If you are after a really sweet & easy romance that is quick to read then this is for you! Plus, there is a dog! What more could you want?

THE GIRL WHO… BY ANDREINA CORDANI // LINK

The Girl Who.. tells the story of Leah, who has been masking her rage over the tragic deaths of her mum and sister for years. Now, with the killer released from prison, it’s time to see how far Leah will go to silence her anger…

I was so intrigued by the plot & I loved multiple perspectives – I am a huge fan of these as I feel like it adds so much more depth to a story. However I just didn’t find myself completely hooked. Characters are a huge plus for me & they all fell kind of flat. It was a really quick read as the writing style flowed really nicely, amazing for a debut book! I found the ending to be a slight anti-climax, I definitely expected a slightly more sinister ending but as this book is a young adult, it is understand me why the author took the specific route she did.

This book definitely gave me Karen M McManus vibes, if you liked One Of Us Is Lying (and the others in that “series”) I’d highly recommend this.

THE DUKE & I (BRIDGERTON BOOK 1) BY JULIA QUINN // LINK

First book in the well known Bridgerton series. Well, mainly well known for the Netflix adaptation. Which is excellent by the way. In the first book we follow Daphne & Simon, fake dating trope. I only read this book because I wanted to watch the tv show and I knew I would regret not reading the book first. The book was… okay. Nothing special, just an easy breezy historical romance. There are some slightly… questionable scenes regarding a male rape – it is definitely down played in the adaptation & Daphne is a lot more annoying in the book.

THE OTHER MOTHER BY JEN BRISTER // LINK

A honest account of what it is to be a mother, following Jen’s journey as a non-biological mother to twin boys. I listened to this via audible and it was so good! It was incredibly funny & really honest. I did find the middle of the book slightly repetitive but it didn’t take away from the narrative. I highly recommend the audiobook if you fancy giving this a go.

CAN YOU HEAR ME? BY JAKE JONES // LINK

Non-fiction following a paramedic, I love medical memoirs usually but this one fell really flat for me. The chapters flit between time lines but the writing was really disjointed & jumpy so it didn’t make any sense. It just didn’t flow. The authors narrative wasn’t engaging enough and I found it quite dull in points.

ADULT VIRGINS ANONYMOUS BY AMBER CREWE // LINK

Katie & Freddie are (almost) 30 year olds who meet at a self help group for virgins. They think they will be able to “help each other out” if you catch my drift… so they can both get on with finding their true romantic destinies. This book is so much more than the synopsis makes you think. I was expecting a sexy, friends with benefits romance but what I actually got was so much more.

The book explored toxic friendships from teenage years (which I could really relate to), how sex can JUST be about sex and battling mental health – in particular OCD. I fell in love with both the main characters but especially Freddie. I just wanted to give him the biggest hug. His family dynamics were so interesting to read and I feel like so many people will be able to relate to the sibling rivalry and not feeling good enough. The LGBTQIA+ rep in the book was incredible, I only wish it had been explored slightly more and we had been able to see more from the various characters.

THE PASSENGERS BY JOHN MARRS // LINK

Now for the last book I read in January. My favourite book of the month & one of my favourite authors! Set in the future, 8 self driving cars are hacked into and set on a collision course. It is up to a select panel and social media to decide who lives & who dies…

It is every bit as fucked up as it sounds but it is INCREDIBLE! So fast paced, clever & every chapter ends like OH MY GOD. So many twists & turns that you just don’t see coming. John Marr’s writing style is so addictive. I recommend ANY of his books but I think this is my new favourite of his.

There you have it – all the books I read in January. I managed 7 books which I am thrilled with. What have you read this month?

OUR FAVOURITE ROMANCE BOOKS

Filed Under: BOOKS, HOME // January 21, 2021

BY RACHAEL BLAKEY

We are only a few weeks from the day of loveeee and we thought we would share with you our favourite romance books. There will, hopefully, be something for everyone as we are going to cover all basis ranging from light-hearted fluffy romances to all out smut, because lord knows we all need a little spice in our life right now.

FAVOURITE ROMANCE BOOKS

FAVOURITE ROMANCE BOOKS

This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens

We couldn’t share our top book recommendations and not include our book club pick, could we?! We have been reading this through the months of January & February and it has gone down so well! “Quinn and Minnie are born on New Year’s Eve, in the same hospital, one minute apart. Their lives may begin together, but their worlds couldn’t be more different. Thirty years later they find themselves together again in the same place, at the same time. Maybe it’s time to take a chance on love…” A really quick & easy romance, perfect for that feel good vibe we all need right now. You can find the book here.

The One We Fell In Love With by Paige Toon

One of our TOP romance book recommendations! We following three sisters; Phoebe, Rose & Eliza. They wouldn’t be more different if they tried but they all have one thing in common. They are all in love with Angus. I read this in one sitting, it is addictive, fast paced & emotional! Paige Toon is one of my favourite romance authors if I want something easy to read that I know I will love. You can find the book here.

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

If you are after a feel-good romance then this is one for you! This is the story of Leon & Tiffy. They share a flat. They share a bed. They have never met! I know I know, one works night shifts and the other works during the day. So they are passing ships in the night. They communicate through post it notes. It is the most wholesome story & you’ll love it. It is funny & heart warming. You can find the book here.

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

I share this recently on our Instagram page and it went down really well! Sophie Kinsella is such a hugely popular romance author, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of her books! Poppy has lost her engagement ring.. and her phone. What is she going to do?! All hope seems lost. Until she finds a phone dumped in a bin – finders keepers. Except the owner of the phone, Sam, doesn’t think so. He wants his phone back… The book had me laughing out loud, I completely fell in love with the dynamics & blossoming relationship between Poppy & Sam. You can find the book here.

ROMANCE BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

If you want sexy romance, then you can never go wrong with a Christina Lauren book! They are the queens of FIREY romance with all the sexy times. We follow Olive & Ethan, arch nemesis but they have to get along for the sake of their siblings – who are dating each other & getting married. However at the wedding, everyone falls ill due to food poisoning, except Olive & Ethan (they are allergic to fish so had something different). Long story short – the honeymoon was won as a competition and can’t be rescheduled so Olive & Ethan go on it. It’s sexy & hilarious. Enemies to lovers is my FAVOURITE. You can find the book here.

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

If you want romance, sex & intense main characters – Colleen Hoover is the author for you. Ugly Love is my favourite by her. Miles Archer is an airline pilot (sexy right?) and the story centres around his relationship with Tate Collins. They are friends. Just friends. Who have sex. He doesn’t want love & she doesn’t have time for a relationship. It’s the perfect set up, as long as Tate can follow two rules: never ask about the past & never expect a future. What could possibly go wrong? You can find the book here.

Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill (amazing rep that we don’t see enough) computer fanatic with a goal… a goal to get a life, after having a almost near death experience. She enlists the help of tattooed motorbike rider, Redford ‘Red’ Morgan. As they spend more time together, Chloe realises maybe she wants more…. This story is fun, hell-a sexy & smart! You can find the book here.

Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

Please tell me you’ve seen the classic movie, staring Deborah Messing? Well this is basically that story in book form and it is GREAT. Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn’t normally do. But there’s something about Drew Nichols that’s too hard to resist. Drew has been invited to his ex’s wedding and is in need of a plus one.. You can find the book here.

We hope you enjoyed our romance book recommendations, keep your eye out for our next book post which will be filled with LGBTQIA+ romance recommendations!

WAYS TO READ MORE BOOKS

BY RACHAEL BLAKEY

WAYS TO READ MORE

One of my most asked questions is “how do you read so much with two kids?” – and I never really know how to answer, I just make it my top priority. I try and do as many jobs around the house that need doing first thing in the morning, whilst both boys entertain themselves/have breakfast ect. So then when it comes to Oliver’s nap – I can read! Even if it is only 5 pages, little & often definitely works. BUT saying that, these are some little tips I have picked up in all the many years I have been reading, on ways to read more books.

1. BE REALISTIC WITH YOUR GOAL – I use Goodreads and every year you can set yourself a goal of how many books you’d like to read in the year and it tallies it up for you so you can keep track and I have definitely had to lower mine since having children. I used to easily read 100+ books a year but now I aim for 52 and if I go over, then yay! Whether it is one book a month or so many pages a day, if you get closer & closer to your goal, you can always increase it but seeing a huge daunting number – the pressure can have the opposite effect and you’ll end up not wanting to read anything.

2. IF YOU DISLIKE A BOOK, PUT IT DOWN – This is something I’ve only really started doing the past couple of years. I used to force myself to finish a book, even if I hated it. Which is just silly. There are too many books I want to read to waste my time on a shitter. Put it down. You can always go back to it if you just aren’t feeling it at the time OR if it really isn’t for you, pass it on to someone who might enjoy it!

3. MOOD READ – I used to set myself a very specific TBR (to be read) list and stick to it every month but sometimes I just wasn’t feeling any of the books I picked when it actually came to picking one. I have since found reading whatever I am in the mood for, I read a lot quicker because it’s exactly what I fancied.

4. USE YOUR TIME WISELY – So say your kid has a decent two hour nap, or you have a couple of hours in the evening. You could easily spend that time just watching whatever on TV or mindlessly scrolling your phone, but what I have recently started doing is reading for 30 minutes or 1 hour and THEN watching tv, it never works quite as well if you do it the other way round because you’ll be too into whatever you are watching.

5. ALWAYS HAVE A BOOK WITH YOU – I always, always, always have a book with me. Or my Kindle. Whichever. Whether it is on your work commute, waiting at the doctors or whilst cooking tea (audiobooks). This is my point earlier, grabbing 5 minutes here & there really adds up!

6. JOIN A BOOK CLUB – One of the best ways to read more is to read with other people! It’s so fun sharing your progress & thoughts with other people who are also reading the same thing! I love taking part in book clubs to the point where we have recently launched one on our That Mama Club Instagram.

7. KINDLE – I 10000% read quicker when I am reading on my kindle. I don’t know what it is but I can easily fly through a book in a day. I especially use my kindle at night time because I am upstairs with a sleeping baby so can’t have the lights on, which is when my kindle comes in useful with its backlight. I know some people are not a fan of electronic reading but honestly, it’s a game changer. Plus books can be a LOT cheaper. The kindle app is actually free to download onto your phone & tablet.

8. DISTRACTION FREE – It is SO easy to be easily distracted whilst reading, especially by your phone or the tv, I am a bugger for it. So I now move my phone to the other side of the sofa or bed, turn the screen over so I can’t see any notifications & I turn the tv off or have it on a really shit channel (I actually prefer reading to background noise) so you’ll not be as distracted.

9. SET A TIME LIMIT – I regularly host reading sprints via my book club, so basically you’ll set an alarm of 30 minutes or 1 hour and you’ll do nothing but read for that amount of time. I find it SO useful to get a good amount of pages read.

10. COMMIT – I always read before I go to sleep. I turn the TV off when I start to feel a little tired and pick up my book. This can go one of two ways – I can either fall asleep much easier OR I get so into the book that I read until the early hours. To be honest I am happy with either. Commit yourself to reading during a certain activity so on your commute, before bed or whilst you’re cooking. Make that your designated reading time.

11. SHARE WHAT YOU READ – I share all my reads on my Instagram stories and save them to a highlight! It’s a great way to discover new reads because people will recommend things similar to what you’ve read. I love sharing the books I have been reading.

12. READ MORE THAN ONE BOOK AT A TIME – I can sometimes do this, depending what mood I am in but I know some people can read 3/4/5 books at a time, which is a great way to read more!

13. FOLLOW BOOKSTAGRAM & BOOKTUBE – This is a dedicated community on Instagram & YouTube who solely share books – what they’re reading, book reviews, hauls ect. It is amazing and addictive.

14. TRY BEFORE YOU READ – Before committing to a full book, why not try the first chapter of a few books and see what takes your fancy! One chapter could turn into a whole book!

There you  have it, 14 super easy ways to read more books! Let us know if you try any of these tips.
