PLANET FRIENDLY PERIOD CARE | TOTM REVIEW

Filed Under: HOME, LIFESTYLE, SUSTAINABILITY // September 17, 2021

THIS ITEM WAS SENT TO US IN EXCHANGE FOR A REVIEW – READ OUR DISCLAIMER FOR MORE INFO

TOTM stands for Time Of The Month.  They are a period positive brand producing ethical and sustainable period care, it is their mission to provide planet friendly period care.  Their tampons, pads and liners are made with certified, organic cotton and they use biodegradable cardboard for the applicators. TOTM aims to use compostable or recyclable packaging wherever possible.  They don’t use any unnecessary plastics, chemicals, dyes or fragrances in their products.  Excitingly they also have a menstrual cup and reusable tampon applicator in their range, to enable you to have a zero-waste period.

As well as looking after the Planet, TOTM aims to support communities too.  TOTM wants to end the silence around periods believing that everyone should have access to period care, periods should be normalised and that there should be menstrual wellbeing education for all.  1% of all online sales is donated to Endometriosis UK.  When you subscribe you are given a £3 voucher every time you recommend a friend.  You can then choose to use this £3 to buy a box of pads that can be donated to Binti.  Binti is a charity that provides menstrual dignity to girls around the world, by ensuring access to pads and education around menstrual health.

When That Mama Club asked me to review some of the products from TOTM, I jumped at the chance.  I was sent a box containing various sizes of pads and tampons (applicator and non) and some liners.  The first thing that I noticed was how beautiful the packaging was!  I have had the opportunity to sample the pads, liners and tampons and I was not disappointed.

planet friendly period care

The liners are super thin and discreet.  The pads are winged, which I personally prefer and stuck really well to my knickers-no moving around leading to possible leakage!  I found them to be really soft, comfortable and absorbent.  Equally importantly, I didn’t notice any horrible chemically smell that I so often notice with other brands of pads.  The tampons are, again, really comfortable and easy to insert and wear.  I used them when I went swimming and couldn’t feel them at all.  The best part of using TOTM products was knowing that I was helping the planet by having a sustainable period and not contributing to plastic waste.

If you are considering changing your period care to be more sustainable, I would recommend giving TOTM products a try.  Through their website there is the option to buy packs as a one off purchase or you can subscribe to have your products delivered to you every month and never worry about being caught out again!

HOW TO LIVE LIFE AT A GENTLER PACE

Filed Under: HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE, SUSTAINABILITY // September 15, 2021

I haven’t always lived at a gentler pace. Until April 2019, I’d had jobs of the hustle and crush it variety where 5:30 a.m. starts, long days, and travel the length and breadth of the country were the norm. My daily commute to the office could be two hours each way. The benchmarks of success were productivity and busyness. My quietly competitive streak meant it wasn’t enough to achieve my targets, I had to exceed them as well. My to do list was a bottomless pit and yet another daily challenge to be met.

Deep down I craved purpose and fulfilment but I wasn’t finding that in my work. It became increasingly clear that my values were at odds with those of the businesses for whom I worked. In my daydreams, I began to contemplate a different way.

GENTLER PACE

A realisation, one weekend, that time was finite led me to hand in my notice, the start of a chain of events that would lead me to Derbyshire. In those early days I was simply putting one foot in front of the other trusting that, somewhere along the line, a plan would unfold.

It was a gradual transition. For several months I couldn’t wean myself off the daily routine that I’d followed for so long. Eventually, and in some ways helped by the enforced slow living of lockdown 1.0, I began to realise the full impact of embracing life at a gentler pace.

I’m the square peg in the round hole. My take on life has always been unconventional. Although I didn’t realise it at the time, the groundwork for seeking out my own version of slow living was being laid a couple of decades ago as I railed, internally at least, against the succession of soul sucking jobs. I longed to find a sustainable way to live on my own terms but I had no idea what that looked like.

It would be several months before I re-read a blogpost I’d written in those early post-resignation days. I’d outlined what I wanted to do and how I wanted to live.

I want to create something whose focus is on slowing down, travelling at a gentler pace yet still having time to watch the world go by or to smell the roses and the coffee, and nurturing the spirit leaving a trail for others to follow – should they wish.

The trail has started to reveal itself and I’m learning why life at a gentler pace is so crucial for me – and maybe for you too. Here are some highlights from my journey so far.

Follow Your Bliss

If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be ~ Joseph Campbell

My quest to forge my own path goes back a long time. Given much consideration over the years, it had often seemed that there were too many obstacles in the way to make that dream a reality. It was the resignation letter that put me on this track that had been waiting for me and calling me for so long. Without the nudge that weekend, I could still be living in Manchester now, doing what I’d always done. Instead I crossed over on to a new path where I started to meet people who understood my craving for a more blissful life, and doors did indeed start to open.

I already knew what following my bliss looked like. I’d journaled about it countless times. The list was always the same. Daylight, lots of it. Long stretches of time spent outdoors. If that involved coming into contact with cows, even better! Muddy boots; space to indulge my love of photography and reconnect with my creative spark; tiny, unexpected adventures; meeting unusual people with great stories; finding connection and beauty in unexpected places. And then, home to write about this blissful life, share the stories on my podcast, or use what I was learning to inspire others.

As I began to trust where my guidance was taking me, cogs began to whir. Stars were aligning. I came across fellow travellers on social media who got it! Books and a variety of resources presented themselves to inform my journey. Ideas started popping into my head, and on to the pages of my notebooks. I still needed to work but the possibilities that appeared were nothing like the conventional jobs listed on my CV. I had to shift my mindset into another gear, forget what had gone before and plan a different future altogether.

After quitting the day job, I was now location independent. Another stay in my favourite place, the Peak District, prompted the decision to fulfil one of my biggest dreams – to move to Derbyshire. Another door opened.

Community, Connection and Collaboration

Your friends will know you better in the first minute you meet than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years ~ Richard Bach

From the outset, after we arrived in Derbyshire, we were welcomed. Wherever we went – the farm shop, my favourite stationery shop, the bakers, the fishmongers, the local dairy – everyone greeted us like old friends. Friendships were forged quickly without the barriers of social niceties that I’d been used to. Many of the people we’ve met in the last couple of months have learned more about me in just a short space of time than those who have known me for years.

Around here, when you pass someone out walking on the lane, they always say hello. We’ve had many lovely conversations, been offered help moving into our new house, or doing a weekly shop from people who, until recently, were complete strangers.

The sense of community that we’ve experienced is unique. It’s so striking that we’ve talked about it often. There’s an openness, a warmth, and a welcoming spirit. I have a connection to the place and the people that I’ve not felt in years.

Something else that stands out is the collaboration between all the businesses. In our local town, it’s clear that there is an understanding – where one succeeds, they all succeed. Shopping local makes a real difference here.

I think the locals have already tapped into the concept of living at a gentler pace. In some ways it’s reminiscent of the life I knew as a child. A period when people had time to stop and chat, and neighbours knew each other and helped where they could.

Reconnect With Nature

The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the Universe, to match your nature with Nature ~ Joseph Campbell

There is an entirely different vibe, an appreciation of the incredible landscape of the Peak District, and a true living off the land culture, in tune with the seasons. We buy our milk from a 24 hour self-service shop on a dairy farm where we can even say hello to the cows. If you’re non-dairy, another farm supplies oat milk. I’ve fed carrots to Alpacas, been invited on visits to several farms, and for drinks with the owners at the local stable.

As far as the eye can see, it’s green. Fields, trees, hills. Dotted with sheep, cows or horses. I know I’m very lucky to have this on my doorstep and I want to share it with others so that, wherever they live, they can also find ways to connect to a gentler paced lifestyle.

I’m sure that spending time in nature is not only essential for our wellbeing and mental health but, at a deeper level, it reconnects us with ourselves. When I was cooped up in an office, being outside and seeing daylight was the one thing I craved. Nature was my sanctuary. It rebalanced me when I felt out of kilter, it fed my creative spark, and brought me the greatest joy.

When you reconnect with nature, you can’t help but want to preserve it. I think that desire to care for our environment starts with us. We have to care for ourselves first and foremost and, by living at a gentler pace, have time to take notice of the tiny seasonal changes happening around us.

What Brings You Joy?

Although the premise of a gentler pace wasn’t fully formed when I conceived the idea, I knew that I wanted to focus on those activities that bring me joy and fulfilment. More than anything, I wanted to step away from the conventional 9-5.

Now, joy is my barometer. Often it’s a leap of faith. Following your bliss doesn’t always make logical sense but I believe it takes you down the paths you are meant to travel. Most importantly, I’m sure that this is how we are supposed to live.

It’s easy to believe that living at a gentler pace is about slowing down. For me, it’s much more about making time, prioritising my joy, and following my bliss. Reducing the busyness so that I have the headspace to think, to experience and to reconnect with my potential. It’s making that sacred space where my ideas can percolate, a place where my nature and Nature meet and magic happens.

The Big Adventure

We’re right at the beginning of our big adventure in the Peak District but already I’m building the foundations to create a lifestyle lived at a gentler pace. One that sees me in greater alignment with not just the seasons and the rhythms of nature but also myself. Most importantly of all, it feels like I’m home.

3 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE GOING BACK TO EDUCATION AS A PARENT

Filed Under: HOME, LIFESTYLE // September 11, 2021

Ad | COLLABORATIVE POST

BACK TO EDUCATION

From 2018 to 2019, the number of non-traditional students (made up of parents) going to back to education in the UK hit 469,985. This, however, doesn’t take away the daunting task of balancing family, work, and school. Without a doubt, you must be ready for the rough terrain ahead and remain committed to the cause. Before enrolling, it is essential to consider certain things. How do you intend to fund it or earn extra academic credits? Highlighted below are other considerations to make.

What funds are available?

The average cost of undergraduate education in the UK is £9,250 annually. Meanwhile, tuition for a master’s degree ranges from £5,000 to £17,000 per school year. The variation in fees depends primarily on the course or programme you intend to offer. Admittedly, as a parent with other pressing financial responsibilities, these costs can be a major put-off. It explains why you must research the availability of funds, grants, or scholarships offered by the government or the higher education institution in question.

Although most UK scholarships are structured to favour international students who wish to study in the country, others prefer citizens. Your task is to find out which ones and whether you fit into their requirements. For example, some internal scholarships attend to students aged 18 – 22 years. Unless you are willing to sacrifice your savings (not advisable, though), you should explore other viable options.

Consider how to earn non-traditional academic credits

Academic credits boost your performance and GPA as you study towards earning a degree. The traditional way to earn credits is to remain consistent with school assignments, projects, and the hours committed to lectures. However, some higher education institutions make it more exciting by helping students earn it through study trips or travel programmes.

As a busy parent, you may want to consider the added benefits of these study trips. When you finally enrol in the university, these will come in handy to fulfil your credit hours. Believe it or not, you stand a chance of graduating quicker when you meet your credit hours. When it comes to these non-traditional credit hours, mature students tend to have an advantage over the 18 and 22- year-olds in this regard.

Is the institution or programme friendlier to adult students?

If you fail to do this check, you will regret ignoring this critical research at some point in your studies. Adult-friendly courses and schools tend to make provision for online classes, weekend or night lectures. Some institutions will offer one or a combination of all to enhance your performance in schooling as a parent. The more flexibility you have, the fewer scheduling conflicts you are likely to face in your studies.

Lastly, do not shy away from asking for help. You need all the support you can get as a parent returning to the schooling environment. It will help if you get mentally ready for the journey ahead.

5 Tips For School Readiness

Filed Under: HOME, LIFESTYLE // September 10, 2021

It’s that time of the year again. The time when most parents start frantically teaching their children their ABC’s and how to count to 20.
As a mother and teacher, I would like to offer some simple steps that are equally beneficial in setting your child up for success at school (and probably more achievable with such a limited time left). Things you as a parent can do these last couple of weeks to help them confidently step into class on that first day.

5 TIPS FOR SCHOOL READINESS

TIPS FOR SCHOOL READINESS

Teach Common Courtesy

A teacher will be far more impressed by a child who can greet them nicely or who can kindly ask to share a book with a fellow classmate than with a student who can sing the alphabet song. After all, a friendly greeting, kind apology or being able to share always goes a long way, even for adults, and especially on the playground.

Practice Name Recognition

This does not mean your child needs to be able to write their name perfectly in the most beautiful handwriting. If they can, good for them. If they can’t, that’s why they’re going to school right? Instead of trying to jam the whole alphabet into their memory in 1 week, rather start helping them to recognise the letters of their name.

Teach How to Put On and Take Off Shoes

Being able to put on (on the right feet) and take off their own shoes is a basic skill for this age group. You can practice tying shoe laces or fastening straps and there are so many nifty tricks on how to teach them which shoe goes on which foot. I can not tell you how many times I’ve had a student trip because they were running around with shoes on opposite feet. So this is definitely something I most often recommend to parents to practice at home.

Practice Zipping

This is such a useful skill to have, especially for children starting school. You can practice zipping and unzipping their backpack, pencil bag and jackets. Jackets are especial tricky as you have to perfectly hook the bottom stop. This is probably on of my favourite skills mastered with my daughter recently, because let’s admit, we can all do with those extra 10 minutes it takes to get the kids out of the house. Of which putting on shoes and jackets are often the main culprits.

Fine Motor Skills Development

Which is just a more technical way of saying ‘work with the hands’. Before children can write or cut (essential school stuff), they need to have hands that are strong enough to do so. Hand and finger strength as well as control is essential for writing. Any crafting activity is great for developing those fine motor skills. Other practical activities include working with playdoh, Lego, peeling fruit, and lacing.
By now I’m sure you get that school readiness does not necessarily mean they should’ve have mastered certain academic skills. Of course early literacy and numeracy is important, but readiness also goes beyond those traditional elements. School readiness is also equally about helping your children develop practical skills that in turn help them become confident and capable little learners. What are your top tips for school readiness?

Heritage Open Days 2021

Filed Under: ADVENTURES, HOME, LIFESTYLE // September 9, 2021

September is here! And this means that not only is autumn fast approaching, and kids are back to school, but it is also the month when you are invited to discover local history and culture at Heritage Open Days 2021!

On 10-19 September loads of different places will open their doors for the public as part of one of the biggest festivals of the year, all to celebrate culture and history. After the year we have had with lockdowns and being stuck at home it will feel even more exciting exploring new places. And what better way to do so then during a few fun filled days of events.

And do you know what the best part of it all is? It is all for free!

heritage open days 2021

It is an event that was established back in 1994 after a European initiative to raise appreciation for the diverse and rich culture of Europe. And up to 50 of the European states have signed on to have their own Heritage Open Days.

With every year the UK festival has grown in size and it has gone from around 700 events in its first year to over 5,500 currently. There are so many different events that there is bound to be one for every taste. I had personally never heard of it before but after having researched it a little I truly think it sounds like such an amazing thing.

Like I said, there should be something for everyone as there is everything from guided tours around city centres, to walks in gorgeous nature. There are events for adults, and events more aimed at children. There are events involving food and others involving cute little furry animals. So, believe me when I say, that there should be something for everyone.

There are so many beautiful places around the United Kingdom just waiting to be discovered. For a full list please visit Heritage Open Days own website. They have a map over the UK, with all the thousands of events, from far up north all the way down to the south, marked out. There are truly so many events, it would be impossible for me to even mention half of them. I did however have a little look and picked out a little taster of what kind of events there are.

Bletchley Park

First out is Bletchley Park, close to Milton Keynes and once the home of some of WW2’s greatest heroes. It was here that the World War Two Codebreakers were based, and it was also here that the modern computing was born.

So why not pay them a visit and explore this historically exciting place with the WW2 Codebreaking Huts and beautiful surroundings.

Bletchley Park, Sherwood Drive, Bletchley, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK3 6EB

The Salvation Army, Hadleigh Training Centre, Castle Lane, Benfleet, Essex, SS7 2AP

The next place on my list a somewhere quite close to us. We are yet to visit but it looks like a great day out. There is 900 acres of farmland to roam around. It was bought by the Salvation Army 130 years ago and the Hadleigh Farm was originally created to help marginalized and unemployed people in society.

It is still a fully functioning farm that produces malt for Malteasers and wheat for Hovis bread. And it continues to help the weaker in society.

If you plan to visit there is lots to do! There is a tearoom to sit down and relax in, original farmhouses to explore, and stunning views.  There is also a Rare Breed Centre for the little ones, which includes ponies, pigs, poultry and different breeds of goats.

Dover Priory Railway Station, Priory Station Approach, Dover, Kent, CT17 9SB

Dover is famous for its White Cliffs, but now you can go for a guided walk to discover more of what Dover has got to offer.

Put your walking boots on and pack a backpack with provisions, because this is a walk cross-county and there are a few steep hills.

There will be beautiful Sea views (on good days you may see all the way to the French Coast), you get to learn about edible plants and you can view a historic Fortress.

The Old School, Old Wolverton Road, Old Wolverton, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK12 5NH

I mean is there anything more magical then sitting under a sky full of stars? As a child I used to love to stop and look up at the dark sky with all these stars twinkling back at me. Now as an adult I live in a far too populated place to be able to see the stars properly.

So to me this even sounds absolutely amazing! You get to gather around a fire, listen to stories, all while looking at the stars. Does that not sound like the cosiest night out ever?

There will be warm drinks and food available and the moon should be almost full harvest moon. I mean, count me in!!!

9 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB5 8BA

Anyone a chocolate fan like me? Then you should go and discover how George Cadbury’s decided to use his chocolate factory to help transform the lives of factory workers. There will be a workshop for children where they will learn the story of Mr Cadbury.

What’s not to love? Storytelling, craft and chocolate all at the same event!

Stephenson Railway Museum, Middle Engine Lane, North Shields, Tyne & Wear, NE29 8DX

Are you a lover of trains? Or maybe you got a child that is? Why not go visit the Stephenson Railway Museum and take a trip along the route of the old coal trains, in a 1950s passenger carriage.

In addition to the train ride there is obviously also the museum to visit, with a range of different locomotives on display. One of them being a locomotive called Billy that was built around 1816. How cool is that?

Tavistock Visitor Information Centre, Court Gate, Bedford Square, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 0AE

Ever hear of a heritage stamp trail? Well Tavistock Subscription Library has created on around the historic town center. From 11 September it is open for children of all ages to join in. They get a heritage passport to collect their stamps in.  There will be clues around the town on different buildings and at each location they can collect their stamps. When all stamps are collected, they will be given a certificate to show off! Which I’m sure most kids will enjoy, mine would!

The Tasting Garden, The Storey Gardens, Meeting House Lane, Lancaster, Lancashire, LA1 1TH

How amazing does it sound with a Tasting Garden?? A garden full of a variety of apples, pears, plums and cherries, all there for you to taste. In this very garden there are 21 fruit trees to find along the paths.

If you tire of apples and pears there are also herbs to look out for and lots of different insects to look out for.

The Italian Gardens, 8-10 South Parade, Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, BS23 IJN

In the Italian Gardens they have something called the Whirligig! It is an event they themselves describes as an ‘extravaganza of free fun!’ And it is all bee-themed.

It is all a celebration with outdoors events, and even a multi-sensory art instillation called Artizani’s Bees where you can walk amongst different types of bee hives.

Ashcombe carpark, Simonsbath, Minehead, Somerset, TA24 7SH

In Somerset I found another little gem, the White Rock Cottage and Ashcombe Gardens. It is a gorgeous place with a cottage and a garden landscape dating back to the Knight family that lived that in the 1820s.

The White Rock Cottage was recently conserved together with an old Victorian school room that is also there to view. They both sound really interesting and I’m sure both adults and children would enjoy a look around. But what really caught my attention was the beautiful woodlands surrounding the cottage. I would love to take a stroll through there and breathing in the fresh air.

Zoological Drive, Discovery Way, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 4AL

I mean have you ever heard of a better combination then a Zoo and a Castle?

Well at Dudley Zoo you would get just that. There are hundreds of exotic animals on a wooded hillside, with a caste just smack bang in the middle of it!

My children would definitely love a day out at this Zoo!!

Let us know your September plans!

THINGS TO DO IN SEPTEMBER

20 THINGS TO DO IN SEPTEMBER

  1. Rainy day weekend? Why not check out your local art gallery, give each child a notepad and some pens or pencils and get them to draw a picture in the style of their favourite piece!
  2. Book tickets for any Halloween activities you’ve got your eye on – things are selling out quickly this year! If you are Manchester based we’ve booked pumpkin patch tickets for the lovely Kenyon Hall Farm but again, there’s limited slots left!
  3. Anyone else still waiting for their Hogwarts letter? I’ve got no recommendations for a flying car, but a trip on The Hogwarts Express will keep you feeling magical.
  4. Its not just summer that’s for festivals – Clapham Common hosts Colourscape Music Festival between the 11th-19th of September. It’s a music festival, inside an art installation – explore inflatable tunnels, immerse yourself in colour and sound. It’s a fully wheelchair accessible festival, and they also have ‘quiet’ days to make it even further accessible.
  5. Join in with Roald Dahl Day on the 12th September. A much beloved author, why not celebrate Roald Dahl day by visiting the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. They have just extended their ‘Imagining Fantastic Mr Fox’ exhibition throughout the month of September.
  6. Pack up a picnic and get outside – the beach, the forest, even your garden and make the most of being able to sit outdoors whilst its still warm enough! When the weather starts cooling a must-have in our picnic basket is a thermos full of hot chocolate, perfect for both grown ups and little ones who need a warming pick-me-up.
  7. Leaf Peeping! An American term for walking through the autumn woodland and enjoying the hues of the changing leaves. The further north in the UK you are the earlier the leaves will turn, so if you are based in Scotland expect some beautiful seasonal colours to start showing in the middle of this month.
  8. Have a ‘Night Time Wildlife Adventure’ at Grange-Over-Sands in the Lake District. Perfect for older children, spend 3.5 hours learning about the nocturnal wildlife of the area. The night-vision goggles and bat-detectors will keep even the most tech-obsessed teens happy, and it’s a totally unique way to explore the outdoors.
  9. Pumpkin spiced lattes might be back but instead of heading for the big chains why don’t you check out your local independent’s seasonal coffee offerings? @newgirlintoon recommends Kith and Kin for those of you living in the North East. The pumpkin spiced latte that they serve up features real pumpkin purée.
  10. Try out a new recipe. September brings in a bountiful harvest of British grown fruit and veg. Beetroot, butternut squash and leeks provide inspiration for a veggie main course, whereas apples, damsons and plums cry out to be made into sumptuous desserts.
  11. Maybe it’s not just the kids starting a new term this year? Are you needing to get organised for your own studies? If you’ve taken the plunge to start (or continue) some studying, here’s a fantastic article and some helpful tips to help balance studying alongside family life.
  12. Make the most of any late summer days by getting outdoors to an adventure park. BeWILDerwood in Cheshire was recently reviewed by one of our mamas –  her family had a great time!
  13. Become a ‘Professor of Palaeontology’ at Paradise Park in West Cornwall. In between visiting the wonderful wildlife and playing in the outdoor and indoor play areas you explore the grounds to find dinos and their eggs. Find all the dinosaurs, and answer the questions to be awarded a ‘Paradise Park Professor of Palaeontology’ certificate.

14 Calling all mini rock n’ roll-ers! Born to Be Wild Child, known for their family rock and roll parties are branching out with an event in Belgrave Hall, Leeds on the 25th September. There’s a rock star fancy dress competition, themed arts and crafts, balloon drop, face painting and of course the best DJ’s in town.

  1. For our Scottish readers, Wigtown is hosting it’s annual book festival from the 22nd September – 4th October and the line up is fantastic! From picnics in the park for the littlest of book lovers through to stargazing walks and author-led discussions there’s something for everyone!
  2. Want to see the biggest pumpkin in the patch? Harrogate Flower Show is home to masses of beautiful seasonal floral displays but also hosts the Northern Championships for the National Vegetable Society. Expect massive marrows, colossal cabbages and towering tomatoes galore!
  3. Warwick Castle is currently hosting ‘The Falconer’s Quest’ – watch up to sixty birds of prey take to the skies amidst the beautiful settings of the castle grounds.
  4. Another one for Roald Dahl fans – the Chocolate Museum in Brixton is hosting a Wonka Bar workshop on the 12th September. Everything from the type of chocolate, the shape and the packaging will be chosen by your child… and I imagine there will be a lot of taste-testing too!
  5. Go foraging! Blackberries are in season, and the dark purple berries can be spotted in most hedgerows. Avoid picking berries from beside busy roads, instead seek out quieter spots away from pollution.
  6. Join in with our autumn bucket list over on Instagram – more fun ideas to do with your family and document throughout the season!

NAVIGATING HEALTHCARE AS A PREGNANT TRANS PERSON

Filed Under: GUEST POST, HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE // September 6, 2021

PREGNANT TRANS PERSON

Today we have Kaiden sharing his story of navigating healthcare as a pregnant trans person! He has a great Instagram page, sharing his life as a Dad to two boys. You can follow him on; @capturinglifewithtwo

Before I was pregnant, I had never seen or heard of any trans men getting pregnant. Of course, I knew that I wasn’t going to be the first, not by a long mile. But I felt so isolated, it really did feel like no-one had ever done this before. Not only did I not know how I would feel or cope myself, but my family, friends, and the healthcare system didn’t know what to make of it all either.

HOUSE PLANT GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Filed Under: GUEST POST, HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE // September 3, 2021

house plant guide

Just as we decorate our homes with comforting personal touches like family photos and knickknacks, plants also play a big role in making our homes more beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. But before you decide that you’re incapable of keeping a plant alive and head straight to the fake plant section – Introducing our house plant guide, we are here to show you which plants are easy to keep and give you a few top tips on how to stop them ending up in the compost heap.

HOUSE PLANT GUIDE

Did you know plants clean the air around you! A fake plant won’t do that – so it’s time to bring the outside in!

Not only do plants emit oxygen into your surroundings but they also absorb toxins/pollutants such as phenols, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide which often causes symptoms ranging from allergies, headaches and fatigue through to nervous-system disorders, cancer and even death! Wow! That’s right kids. Plants are heroes!

Here are some of the best air purification plants which are also easy to care for. – There is many types of these plants but all are easy to grow and thrive with little attention, providing years of detoxifying for your home or office!

Philodendrons. These come in climbing and non-climbing varieties and are very easy to care for.

Light requirements – Bright indirect sunlight. Watering requirements – regularly check the soil moisture with your finger, to your first knuckle. If it’s dry, give it some water.

Pothos.

Light requirements – low to bright indirect sunlight. Perfect to bring life to a dark room or corner.

Watering requirements – allow soil to completely dry out before watering. Roughly every 2 weeks. This plant doesn’t like being over-watered. In winter it will require even less watering.

Peace lily.

A bit of a diva but still fairly easy to care for. It’ll let you know if it’s unhappy! Light requirements – bright indirect sunlight.

Water requirements – This is a thirty plant! It likes the soil to be kept moist. You’ll notice the leaves will droop when it wants a drink (told you it’s a diva!). It also prefers filtered water or rain water over tap water. Be warned though that this plant is toxic if ingested. So not a good choice if you have pets or children that have a habit of eating things they aren’t meant to!

Spider plant.

A fairly laid back plant.

Light requirements – bright indirect sunlight but is happy in darker areas as well. They can even be moved outside in the summer onto a warm patio.

Watering requirements – likes to be watered regularly. Allow the top of the soil to slightly dry out before watering again to avoid root rot.

house plant guide

Not only do plants make a dark dreary room more appealing, but they also make people happy! Taking care of your plant babies is a great way to focus on the little things to ground yourself. Small routines formed when caring for your plants provide big relief from the hectic energy of the daily grind. Having plants around the house improves your mental wellbeing, as well as your memory, your productivity and creativity. So call me a crazy plant lady all you like, but my 50+ plants probably makes me a little less crazy!

Here’s a few more things you should know about house plants:

Their survival depends on more than just your ability to remember to water it. Just like us humans, plants also need specific conditions to thrive. So when choosing your plant always do your research. Does that plant like regular fertilising? Does it like a big spacious pot, or does it pretty to be snug (pot bound)? Does it go into hibernation in winter and require less attention during the winter months?

Another thing to consider before deciding on your plant is to think about where in the house/office it will be situated. If it’s a very warm window with plenty of direct sunlight you are going to want to look into getting a plant that worships the sun. Many house plants thrive with indirect sunlight and can act out like a stroppy toddler if placed in a position that is not to their satisfaction.

Here’s a short list of some plants which thrive in bright sunny conditions, that are also great for beginners:

Money plants/Jade plants.

Aloe – Not just Vera. There’s many varieties.

Mother in laws tongue/Snake plants.

Cacti & Succulents.

There are many wonderful groups and communities online filled with novice and more experienced plant owners. So if you ever have a question about your plants seek out a group on Facebook for advice. One that we recommend is All About Plants UK, but there’s many others available.

TRIED & TESTED : SATISFYER PRO 2 REVIEW

SATISFYER PRO 2 REVIEW

Welcome to a brand new series here on TMC; Tried & Tested! Today we are bringing you the Satisfyer Pro 2 Review. If you haven’t heard of the Satisfyer Pro, it is a toy that massages the clitoris using pressure waves and tingling pulsations. Basically it is a vacuum for your clit… but better. It features 11 intensity levels and the silicone cap is removable for easy cleaning. It is waterproof which means you can add a little something special to your shower\bath.

*THIS POST MANY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS – CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AFFILIATE LINKS

SATISFYER PRO 2 REVIEW

The toy is rechargeable, meaning you’ll never need to go out to buy batteries. To charge it, you just dock the magnetic charger to the base of the toy and plug it into a USB wall adapter. The white light will flash whilst charging and become steady when it’s done. A full charge takes around 1.5 hours, though the first charge may take up to 8 hours.

I have always been a bullet girl, never really straying from what I knew would get me off. HOWEVER over the past 12 months I have been more and more intrigued by new toys that caught my eye, and one I saw continuous rave reviews for was this one. I umm’d and ahh’d for a while before finally treating myself and boyyyy did I treat myself.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

My partner and I used this together the first time and i’m not going to lie, I just couldn’t get to grips with it. It didn’t feel great and took a while to get it in the “right” place. HOWEVER I used it solo a few days later and holy shit balls. Amazing. I think I felt like I had more time to learn how to best use the toy, what setting worked for me ect. The Satisfyer has this incredible ability to engorge the clitoris so it is a lot more sensitive, meaning orgasms are *chef’s kiss*.

Speaking of orgasms.. they come in fast and multiple times.. compared to using my usual vibrator, my clitoris is more able/ready to move onto a second, third, and fourth orgasm. I know right? Amazing. However this being said, I definitely recommend some sort of lube, otherwise it can leave your clit feeling rather sore and sorry for itself.

Lubricant is mainly differentiated between “water-based” and “silicone-based”. Water-based lubricants are easy to use and are suitable to use with condoms, however these lubricants evaporate over time. Silicone-based lubricants are not compatible with some silicone-based products, so you wouldn’t use them with the satisfyer.

NEGATIVES:

The only slight downfall to this toy is that it isn’t the quietest, well.. until you get it in the right spot and then the volume does decrease slightly. Even the buttons have a clicking sound.

I also wish it was kind of… prettier and it’s quite bulky too. My 4 year old asked why I had an ear thermometer on my bedside table.

OVERALL:

Would I recommend this toy? Absolutely. It’s maybe not a great toy for those who are only just branching into the world of clitoral toys but it is incredible for those that are wanting to step up their sex toy game!

Want to give the Satisfyer a go?? Click here to treat yourself*

Have you tried the Satisfyer Pro 2? Are you a sex toy fan?

TMC TALK : TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME

Filed Under: HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE // August 27, 2021

TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME

As you know, on TMC we are incredibly passionate about raising awareness and today we want to talk about Toxic Shock Syndrome. In 2019 a lady who works with my Dad lost her 13 year old daughter to TSS. I had vaguely heard of it and kind of knew what it was but since then I have educated myself a lot on the causes, signs and treatments.

WHAT IS TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME?

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by bacteria getting into the body and releasing harmful toxins.

It’s often associated with tampon use in young women, but it can affect anyone of any age – including men and children. TSS gets worse very quickly and can be fatal if not treated promptly. But if it’s diagnosed and treated early, most people make a full recovery. – sourced from the NHS website.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is caused by either staphylococcus or streptococcus bacteria.

This usually lives on the surface of around a third of people’s skin, but if they get deeper into the body they can release toxins that damage tissue and stop organs working.

These things can increase your risk of getting TSS:

  • using tampons – particularly if you leave them in for longer than recommended or you use “super-absorbent” tampons
  • using female barrier contraceptives, such as a contraceptive diaphragm or cap
  • a problem with your skin, such as a cut, burn, boil, insect bite or a wound after surgery
  • childbirth

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) start suddenly and get worse quickly. They include:

  • a high temperature
  • flu-like symptoms, such as a headache, feeling cold, feeling tired or exhausted, an aching body, a sore throat and a cough
  • feeling and being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • a widespread sunburn-like rash
  • lips, tongue and the whites of the eyes turning a bright red
  • dizziness or fainting
  • difficulty breathing
  • confusion

Sometimes you may also have a wound on your skin where the bacteria got into your body, but it may not look infected.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?

If you have toxic shock syndrome (TSS), you’ll be admitted to hospital and may need to be treated in an intensive care unit.

Treatment for TSS may involve:

  • antibiotics to treat the infection
  • in some cases, purified antibodies that have been taken out of donated blood, known as pooled immunoglobulin, may also be given to help your body fight the infection
  • oxygen to help with breathing
  • fluids to prevent dehydration and organ damage
  • medicine to help control blood pressure
  • dialysis if your kidneys stop functioning
  • in severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove dead tissue. Rarely, it may be necessary to amputate the affected area

Had you heard of toxic shock syndrome? Did you know any of the causes?

5 ARGUMENTS FOR LIVING IN THE PRESENT THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE

Filed Under: LIFE, LIFESTYLE // August 12, 2021

LIVING IN THE PRESENT

AD COLLABORATIVE POST //

Should you be living in the present and enjoy life as it comes to you? Or should you keep one eye on the future at all times?

Society tells us that we should do the latter. But it comes at a terrible cost. We never really get to live an authentic human experience. We constantly worry about what is coming down the pike instead of enjoying what’s in front of us now. It stops us from ever really letting go.

LIVING IN THE PRESENT

In this post, therefore, we take a look at some of the arguments for living in the present that make sense. We’re not saying that you should burn through your life’s savings. But you should go through life reminding yourself that the future never arrives. It’s always out of reach.

You Worry Less

It may surprise you that some of the greatest religious figures throughout history were famous for telling people to live in the present. Jesus, for instance, told people to “care not for the morrow.” Buddha is also famous for telling his disciples to forget about their worldly treasures.

Experiencing your life as it is now is a great way to avoid worrying. Almost always, the sensations you’re receiving by being alive right now are good enough. The main problem is your thoughts, not the reality of the situation.

You Can Focus More

Once you start worrying less, you also find that you naturally start focusing more. All of a sudden, you are able to concentrate on tasks that would have caused you difficulties in the past. Often, you can solve problems that have been vexing you for weeks – perhaps months.

You Can Enjoy Life More

Instead of constantly worrying about money, living in the present gives you permission to enjoy your life more. If now is the right time to go ahead and buy something, you won’t wait. You’ll just get what you need.

If you need a little extra money to tide you over, you’re not afraid to read up on your options on sites like Buddy Loans. You take what you need.

Your Relationships Improve

Living in the moment may also improve your relationships with other people. Friends, family and colleagues may admire you for your “can do” attitude to life. They can see that you have a certain freedom about you, and they will want to know how you’re doing it.

You’ll Let Go Of Your Regrets

When you dwell in the past all the time, you can get into the habit of continually mulling over your regrets. You always look back and wonder what might have been. But, again, that’s an unhealthy way of approaching life. It drains you of energy in the present and it can make you feel depressed.

Living well is all about taking life as it comes. You want to avoid being “sticky” where negative thought patterns rumble around your head for days, weeks or months at a time.

So, after reading this, are you ready to start living in the present?

Busting Common Sex Myths That Are Completely False

Filed Under: HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE, SEX & RELATIONSHIPS // August 9, 2021

A few months ago we shared common vagina myths that weren’t true and you all loved it, so we thought we would do a part 2 in the Myth Busting series. Today we are sharing common sex myths that aren’t true and boy is there a LOT. We have narrowed it down to 10 of our personal favourites that are all absolutely bullshit.

THIS BLOG POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS, TO LEARN MORE PLEASE READ OUR DISCLAIMER

COMMON SEX MYTHS

REAL SEX IS JUST LIKE PORN

Hahahaha, no. Absolutely not. Do I want to go at it for hours? No. Do I look like I can be bent like a Stretch Armstrong? HA. Can I experience orgasm after orgasm through penetration? Don’t be stupid. Porn is work. It’s someone’s job. It is created for entertainment.

STI TESTS ARE JUST FOR THOSE WHO “SLEEP AROUND”

A very popular misconception. STI tests are for ANYONE who has unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex.

CONTRACEPTION IS A WOMAN’S RESPONSIBILITY

Oh, a favourite of mine *cue eye roll*. The decision to have sex is a joint one. I once was about to have sex with a guy and was surprised when I asked if he had any condoms. “Oh no, I presumed you would be on the pill or something…” douche bag. The only way to protect against a sexually transmitted infection (STI) is by using a condom.

YOU CAN’T GET PREGNANT IF THE PENIS “PULLS OUT”

The amount of people who I know have got pregnant by using the pull out method is ridiculous. I don’t know how anyone can have the logic that it would work to prevent pregnancies, but alas. It happens. Before a penis ejaculates, there’s sperm in the pre-ejaculatory fluid (sometimes called pre-come), which leaks out when a person gets an erection.

EVERYONE IS HAVING SEX

Wrong. Having sex is a personal choice and it honestly makes me sad the amount of people rush into it because they think everyone is doing it. Also, if you have had sex one – don’t feel pressured to do it again. Wait until you are ready.

VAGINAS GET LOSER THE MORE PEOPLE THEY HAVE SEX WITH

Nope. No. The vagina is a muscle that expands and contracts. It also baffles me how a person with a vagina could have sex with the same partner for 10 years and nothing be thought of it, but one who has multiple sexual partners over that same time and her vagina must be the size of the Grand Canyon. People need to fucking behave.

VIRGINITY APPLIES TO ONLY VAGINAL SEX

It’s no secret that I despise the term “losing your virginity”, you don’t LOSE anything and i’ll be damned if a penis is that special it changes my identity. The word “virginity” has been used to describe a heterosexual woman who has not had vaginal sex. This obviously does not represent people of all genders and sexual orientations, who are likely to have a different meaning of virginity. Your “first time” is extremely personal and means something different to each person.

MASTURBATION IS HARMFUL TO YOUR SEX LIFE

Listen, as long as it feels good for you and you enjoy it – go forth and wank. Masturbating is healthy and safe. It isn’t for everyone which we fully understand. There’s no right or wrong way to go about it. Whether you prefer the use of toys to help you orgasm or good old fashioned hand. It is very much an each to their own type scenario.

ANAL SEX IS ONLY FOR GAY MEN

This is such an outdated notion that it is laughable. Wanting to try different sexual activities with your partner does not mean anything about your sexual orientation.

VAGINA OWNERS ALWAYS EXPERIENCE AN ORGASM THROUGH PENETRATIVE SEX

If only it was that easy eh? A recent study showed that 40% of women orgasm through penetrative sex, where as the other 60% need “assistance”, whether that it through toys* or clitoral stimulation.

There you have it! 10 common sex myths that are completely untrue. Did you believe any of these growing up?

5 TIPS TO LIVE A MORE SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

Filed Under: HOME, LIFE, LIFESTYLE, SUSTAINABILITY // July 31, 2021

SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

AD | COLLABORATIVE POST

To teach our children good values, we need to lead by example. Living a green lifestyle is increasingly important, and it doesn’t have to be difficult. There are so many simple changes you can make to go green. Let’s start off with these five great ideas to live a more sustainable lifestyle:

1 . Switch up your diet

According to a study from the University of Oxford, ‘cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73 percent.’ You might not be ready to try veganism straight away, and it is a big step. Consider first reducing the amount of meat you consume. When you feel ready, you might start with vegetarianism.

To help you make a start, try using the GreenKitchen app, here you’ll find plenty of delicious and healthy vegetarian recipes. The app is easy to use, and includes plenty of photo and video guides.

  1. Conserve water

To live a greener lifestyle, try to save water around your home. To help you out you can purchase water- efficient shower heads. These showerheads push the water through tiny holes while adding jets of air. You can also buy flow-restricting fixtures to use on your taps. For a few other ways to conserve water, try these:

  • Purchase a rainwater collector.
  • Try a low-flow toilet.
  • Get into good habits, like not running the taps for so long.

  1. Support Sustainable Companies

To live a green lifestyle, it’s important to support sustainable companies. Look for brands that are eco-friendly, cruelty free and ethical. Focus on earth-kind and biodegradable materials. If you need help researching sustainable companies you can try using the ‘Good On You App’. Here you can get the low-down on plenty of brands, helping you to practice more mindful shopping.

  1. Grow Veggies

Growing your own foods is a great way to live more sustainably. There are plenty of vegetables and fruits that you can grow in your garden. If you have kids, growing food is a great opportunity to teach them about living green. Kids love playing in the garden, and you can turn vegetable growing into a fun game. There are so many benefits to gardening, you’ll get some exercise and improve your mental health too.

  1. Drive Less

Reducing your driving time is a great way to lower your carbon footprint. Before you jump in the car, consider taking your bike and going for a stroll. If you do drive, an electric vehicle is the most sustainable option. EVS don’t need fuel, so you’ll also save some money. Driving can be a big expense, but there are lots of ways to save. Before you renew your car insurance, look around for new deals. There are plenty of very cheap car insurance options out there. You might also consider opting for a second-hand vehicle.

To look after the planet we all need to try and live more sustainably. When you live sustainably you can also boost your savings.

LIFE AFTER RESTRICTIONS | WHAT NOW?

LIFE AFTER LOCKDOWN

LIFE AFTER RESTRICTIONS

Becoming a mum is a big and new experience for any woman, especially for the first time; but how about doing it during a worldwide pandemic? We are struggling to adapt to life after restrictions.

I found out I was pregnant in January 2020, and had my first scan in February, fast forward one month later the lockdown began. At this stage I wasn’t really too worried as I thought surely this won’t still be going on in September when I was due to give birth, how wrong was I!
I enjoyed my pregnancy, and the extra time I spent at home with my husband, we live with my parents and brother and sister (full house – I know!) so I was grateful for this as it would’ve been very different if I couldn’t see them too, and I really feel for the new mums that couldn’t see family.

Jacob was born on 6th September 2020 after a 10 hour labour, the first 6 hours I was alone in the hospital, having to keep yourself calm while trying to communicate to the midwifes what was happening was really difficult; the midwifes didn’t believe how fast I was progressing so kept telling me to get some rest. After a lot of begging for someone to check how dilated I was, the midwife quickly apologised, said I was 7cm and to call my husband to get here as soon as he could. He had popped home to get a blanket, expecting a long night of waiting in the car so he raced back to the hospital in record time.
Due to Jacob being back to back I couldn’t get him out so after around 4 hours of pushing and a lot of blood, sweat and tears (an episiotomy and suction cup too!) he was born.

Jacob is now 10 months and with lockdown rules eased I can’t help but feel anxious for what is to come. Having been told my whole pregnancy and Jacobs whole life to stay away from people, this included friends and loved ones; I now can’t imagine people touching and holding Jacob.

When we have seen people – at a distance and always abiding by the rules; he is always so excited to see a new face so I hope he is too young to have truly been affected by it all. I’ve spoken to other mums who have older children and have had instances where they’ve had to tell their child to stay away from other children at the park; which is obviously not really what we want to be teaching them.
The most we’ve done in Jacobs life is go for walks to our local park or coffee shop, and these small activities feel so daunting to me, obviously as this is my only experience as a mother I couldn’t say what I would’ve been like without the pandemic, but I don’t imagine I would’ve been this nervous.

It feels like we are so used to not being around family and friends, we are now so well trained in how to live life the way we currently are, isolated and distanced, that the thought of getting back to some kind of normal seems impossible.
I think it’s really important for us mums to remember that just because the rules are changing we should still do what we are comfortable with. We go through so much to bring this tiny human into the world so it’s understandable we feel nervous, pandemic or not.

I worry all the time, is Jacob doing enough of what he should be doing at his age? Is he playing enough? Is he watching too much tv? Is he interacting enough? Getting enough fresh air?  All the normal worries  mums have I’m sure, heightened by this lack of normality he was born into. But then when I look at this happy little boy I realise I must be doing something right and it’s just going to take some time getting used to and easing our self back into the new version of “normal”

Love this quote and picture @mrskindonandco posted the other day.

It reminded me that it’s ok to have days where I’m not my best self. There are days that are super hard to get through, and you’re just willing for it to be over. But those days pass.

Don’t be afraid to take a step back, gather your thoughts, regroup. Putting yourself first sometimes is what will help you flourish!

Why getting outdoors is good for you We’ve all Why getting outdoors is good for you

We’ve all had those days where everything is going wrong, we’re all shouting and feeling frustrated. The best piece of advice I ever received as a parent is in those times, get outside. There is something about everyone getting fresh air, and the physical space around you that helps calm any situation.

Here are some more benefits to getting outside (whether it’s a walk or just sitting in the garden)

🐞Lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and improves your mood.

🐞The fresh air also helps you sleep better

🐞Improves focus — Studies show that both adults and children who have difficulties focusing or controlling impulses are better able to concentrate after being in nature.

🐞Helps us heal quicker - patients who spent time outdoors during their recovery required fewer painkillers, had fewer complications and experienced shorter hospital stays.

🐞Tops up your vitamin D - Which is an important vitamin for overall health, as well as strong and healthy bones

🐞Improves your immune system - A study published in 2010 evaluated the effect of forest bathing on immune function. For a group of Japanese adults, a three-day trip to the forest increased the number of white blood cells in their blood. These levels of white blood cells stayed elevated for more than 30 days after their adventure in the woods!

🐞Fosters a better imagination and creativity in children

What are your favourite ways to enjoy being outside?
