Want to feel like an amazing parent?

Filed Under: BABY, HOME, MOTHERHOOD // December 28, 2021

Everyone wants to be a great parent. Figuring out how to do so can be complicated, however. It’s not as though you’re handed a manual once your child is born. That could lead to you looking for things to do when you feel like a bad mum or dad. It could also make you strive to do better. There are multiple ways to be an amazing parent. It doesn’t have to be as difficult as you’d think. Doing everything you can to make the best decisions for your child will be enough. You can do that in a few ways. While it’ll take effort, it’s much simpler than you’d expect.

an amazing parent

Easy Ways To Be A Great Parent

Be A Role Model

It’s easy to tell your child how they should behave. It’s harder to show them, although it’s something that you’ll need to do. You should be a good role model.

People learn by imitating, especially during their early years. Being a positive example during this time is essential.

Your child is likely to do as you do. If there’s something that you don’t want them replicating, then don’t engage in that behavior.

The opposite can be said for positive behaviour you want them to engage in. The more you do it, the more they will. It could also be a great way to build a relationship with them.

Show Your Love

There’s no such thing as loving your child too much. You’ll need to show them that you love them, however. That shouldn’t be done with presents.

If you typically show your love by giving gifts a lot, you could spoil them. It’s much more recommended that you show them with acts of love, such as hugs.

Spending time with them as much as you can is also suggested. It’ll show them that you support them and are there for them without spoiling them.

Talk With Your Child

You’ll already know the importance of communication in daily life. That’s especially true with work and with your partner.

Many people overlook it when it comes to their child, however. You’ll need to communicate with them regularly, regardless of what age they are.

That doesn’t simply mean talking to them. You’ll need to be an active listener. Doing so will help your relationship with them flourish.

There are other benefits to this. You can help their brain develop. By using their brain to communicate regularly, your child exercises certain parts of their brain.

That should be enough of a reason to speak with them as much as you can.

How To Be An Amazing Parent: Wrapping Up

Everyone wants to know how to be an amazing parent. While there’s a lot of advice that you can follow, these can depend significantly on you and your child.

You’ll need to adapt to you and their needs and preferences. Focusing on their best interests will be a priority.

Doing so will make sure that you’re an amazing parent. While your child mightn’t always agree with you, looking out for them will be the most effective way of parenting.

SHORTCRUST MINCE PIE RECIPE

Filed Under: Christmas, FAMILY RECIPES, FOOD // December 22, 2021

Nothing screams Christmas quite like the smell of a freshly baked mince pie. Why not wow your guests this Christmas and out this super simple shortcrust mince pie recipe!

shortcrust mince pie recipe

Equipment

  • A rolling pin
  • Weighing scales
  • A round cookie cutter and smaller star shaped cutter
  • A tart baking tray
  • A pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 300g plain flour
  • 150g butter (We like to use Stork when baking)
  • 50g icing sugar
  • Jar of mince meat
  • 1 egg

Method

  • Put the flour, butter and icing sugar in a bowl and rub together until it forms into a breadcrumb like texture
  • Using your hands, bind the mixture together until it’s like a dough consistency, if you’re struggling, try adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of water (but try and avoid it if you can for the shortest pastry!)
  • Tip onto a very lightly floured surface, knead briefly until smooth, then chill in the fridge for 30 mins or until firm.
  • You can lightly grease the tart baking tray whilst the pastry is chilling.
  • Once they’re done in the fridge, dust the work surface and rolling pin with flour and roll out the pastry until it is around 5mm thick.
  • Using a circle pastry cutter cut out 24 bases, put them into the tray and fill each one with 1 teaspoon of mince meat. Be careful not to overfill them as they will bubble over and look messy.

COPING WITH ANOTHER CHRISTMAS IN A PANDEMIC

Filed Under: Christmas, HOME // December 21, 2021

Christmas in a pandemic

This time last year, I think all of us hoped that we wouldn’t still be worried about the pandemic during Christmas 2021. By all means, things aren’t anywhere near as bad as they were a year ago, but there’s still a lot of talk on the news about more restrictions and the possibility of Christmas being cancelled yet again. Let’s be honest, it’s not the best way to get excited for the holiday season, especially as much of your life is still being affected by what’s going on around us. Some families are worried about what to do regarding seeing friends or family this year, and there are other common issues – like how you’ll afford Christmas – that are made even worse after another topsy-turvy year. So, I thought I’d put together a short article to help you cope with another Christmas in a pandemic!

Follow the rules

Whatever the rules are where you live – and yes, this can be super confusing knowing what they are – you should do your best to follow them as strictly as you can. Regardless of whether you agree with them, the rules do exist to try and make everyone safe. It’s a good idea to stay updated with alerts on your phone so you never miss one of the many press conferences. Remember, if you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, most of what BoJo says won’t refer to you – we need to check our own local government guidelines.

Save money

Christmas is usually a time to splash the cash and treat those you love. You can still do the second part of this, but it’s a good idea to save money wherever possible. Some of you might already be struggling to pay for Christmas after being laid off or taking a lot of time off work with the virus during the year. While things like payday loans or credit cards could help you, the best approach is to reduce your spending. Find ways to save money this Christmas – like this very cheap Christmas dinner idea from BBC Good Food.

Take regular tests

If you are worried about seeing other people, or having friends and family over your house this Christmas, one way to ease those fears is by taking regular tests. You can order lateral flows or PCRs online and it’s a good idea to take a few in the days leading up to your Christmas gettogether. Get your guests to test as well and you can hold a little party or gathering feeling safe as everyone is negative.

It is sad to think of yet another Christmas in a pandemic, but at least things are more relaxed than they were last year. We currently can still see other people, but it’s still strange to think that 2019 was the last year where we had a proper Christmas. Hopefully, you find these tips helpful and can cope with the festive fun in 2021. Be sure to stay safe and keep your family protected, and you can still have a good one this year.

PHOTOS YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CHRISTMAS

Filed Under: Christmas, ENTERTAINMENT, HOME, LIFESTYLE // December 8, 2021

Christmas is the most magical time of year and capturing those special moments is something we at TMC love to do. Sharing our memories to social media is something of the norm these days, to we wanted to make a checklist of photos you have to take this Christmas. Whether it be creative images, memory shots or just festive fine details, they’ll all be perfect for the grid.

With this list, you’ll be ready to take advantage of festive props and backgrounds, as well as capturing your loved ones’ excitement and preserve precious moments of family togetherness.

You could even consider referring back to this blog post for our TMC Christmas hashtag challenge!

Picking out your Christmas tree

Picking out a Christmas tree is so much fun and something your kids will look forward to every year, as well as something they’ll look back on and remember when they’re older. Your tree is usually the focal point of your decorations, so why not document it! Whether you’re at a Christmas tree farm or a local garden centre, grab your phone or camera and capture the joy of finding the perfect tree!

Your favourite decoration

We all get a little nostalgic when pulling out the Christmas ornaments, why not take a detailed shot of your favourite decoration? You could be creative with angles, lighting and that pretty Christmas light bokeh in the background.

Decorating the tree together

Get the whole household involved and capture the laughs. It’s such an easy way to capture your family doing something festive together. Those natural, candid shots of the kids stringing the lights and carefully placing each ornament are sure to bring back happy memories for years to come. Top tip: get in close to capture each person’s expression!

Mistletoe

Whether you capture the family harvesting of fresh mistletoe or a sweet little kiss beneath it, it’s got to be worth getting that shot!

Presents & Wrapping Details

If you take the time and effort to wrap your family presents, you should definitely document that! Again, experiment with angles and lighting to make a more interesting picture. You could even take the photos of the present about to be wrapped

Flat lays

It goes without saying; a festive flat lay always gets some love on the gram. You can use anything and everything to fit the vibe (or prompt) for your shot. Herse a little list of things to include:

  • Christmas decorations
  • Fairy lights
  • Holly or other Christmas foliage
  • Books
  • Mugs with your favourite hot beverage
  • Christmas sweet treats – think candy canes, chocolate coins, Santa lollies, biscuits, etc.
  • Wrapping materials – ribbons, bows, glitter, present toppers
  • Knitwear / blankets
  • Candles
  • Stockings
  • Presents

Christmas is all about spending time with those you love most. So capture those excited faces whenever and wherever you can. Whether it’s unwrapping presents, seeing Santa for the first time, those thank you hugs, taking part in Christmas bakes and crafts, the world is your oyster. Be creative, play around with your angles and editing and just have fun!

Below we’ve done a festive photo checklist of more wonderful ideas; you could print it off or save it to your phone so you always have to hand. Also don’t forget, a lot of these ideas can be used not only for your memory making or Instagram feed, but also to take part in our Christmas hashtag challenge.

We rarely hear environmental articles in the news, and I couldn’t find an environmental blog either. I created Enviroline Blog when I was 17 (in 2019) and studying Environmental Science as one of my A-Levels. I was discovering all this information and I wanted to share it. Originally, I was sharing just awareness and information but since then I have been sharing tips and ways to help.

In May 2020, I decided to include Mental Health and Eating Disorder Recovery on my blog. I had just been discharged from an eating disorder clinic and decided that I was in a healthy mindset to spread awareness. I’m also diagnosed with depression & anxiety.

Why getting outdoors is good for you We’ve all Why getting outdoors is good for you

We’ve all had those days where everything is going wrong, we’re all shouting and feeling frustrated. The best piece of advice I ever received as a parent is in those times, get outside. There is something about everyone getting fresh air, and the physical space around you that helps calm any situation.

Here are some more benefits to getting outside (whether it’s a walk or just sitting in the garden)

🐞Lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and improves your mood.

🐞The fresh air also helps you sleep better

🐞Improves focus — Studies show that both adults and children who have difficulties focusing or controlling impulses are better able to concentrate after being in nature.

🐞Helps us heal quicker - patients who spent time outdoors during their recovery required fewer painkillers, had fewer complications and experienced shorter hospital stays.

🐞Tops up your vitamin D - Which is an important vitamin for overall health, as well as strong and healthy bones

🐞Improves your immune system - A study published in 2010 evaluated the effect of forest bathing on immune function. For a group of Japanese adults, a three-day trip to the forest increased the number of white blood cells in their blood. These levels of white blood cells stayed elevated for more than 30 days after their adventure in the woods!

🐞Fosters a better imagination and creativity in children

What are your favourite ways to enjoy being outside?

When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to bre When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to breastfeed. I had enough new things to learn (and a traumatic birth on top) so we gave formula from the start. For the sake of my own mental health, it was a decision I felt strongly about throughout pregnancy because I knew I would obsess and feel broken if breastfeeding ‘failed’

With the formula shortage crisis currently going on in America, there are many unhelpful comments telling people to just breastfeed instead. Apart from the fact you can’t just suddenly start producing milk, there are many reasons why some one may choose to use formula

🍼 They are taking a medication incompatible with breastfeeding

🍼 Their milk supply simply wasn’t enough and couldn’t be improved

🍼 Their baby has severe allergies (CMPA)

🍼 They have adopted or used a surrogate

🍼 They are a trauma survivor and breastfeeding is triggering for them

🍼 They don’t feel comfortable breastfeeding in front of others

🍼 They actually pump and give that in a bottle so that they can rest and let others take a turn

🍼 Likewise they have chosen to combi-feed

Did you use formula for your baby? Let’s share our stories so others don’t feel afraid or ashamed to say they choose to use bottles
