50+ THINGS TO DO WHILST NESTING IN PREGNANCY

Filed Under: MATERNITY, PREGNANCY // January 3, 2021

BY CAITYLIS ZEALAND

NESTING IN PREGNANCY

Nesting, my absolute favourite part of both my pregnancies. The stage where your ‘mama bird’ kicks in and all you can think, breathe and do is sort, sort, sort! I found it usually kicked in for me around 30 weeks and probably lasted for about a month (or up until you don’t have the energy anymore!) in both my pregnancies. But boy was it more intense the second time around.

You can usually tell when a pregnant woman is nesting by the state of her home. If it’s looking exceptionally cleaner than usual, or perhaps a bit more organised or maybe you spot her doing the strangest jobs (like when brad caught me scrubbing every single radiator with a toothbrush).

It’s just this instinct that everything must be clean, organised and sorted before the new arrival. Because that Mama knows she ain’t going to have time to be scrubbing radiators for years soon.

So, if you feel like you’ve cleaned every-possible-thing you own, here’s an extra list of things you could do if you’re itching for a little more.

But mama, please rest!

  1. Strip the sofa cushions and wash them all
  2. Hoover under cushions and behind the sofa
  3. Wash any rugs
  4. Dust and clean blinds
  5. Clean radiators
  6. Wipe down skirting boards/coving
  7. Organise Tupperware
  8. Organise food cupboards
  9. Check dates on food produce
  10. Wash doormats
  11. Wipe down internal doors and handles
  12. Antibac light switches and sockets
  13. Declutter DVD’s and CD’s
  14. Sort older children’s toys
  15. Paint over any marked walls
  16. Wash baby’s clothes, blankets and bedding
  17. Wash any soft toys for baby
  18. Dust any light fittings
  19. Disinfect bin
  20. Deep clean washing machine
  21. Descale kettle
  22. Wipe down cupboard fronts in the kitchen
  23. Antibac remotes + keyboards
  24. Fill in a pregnancy journal
  25. Clean out under beds
  26. Organise nappy caddies for different rooms of the house
  27. Make memory on your phone/SD cards for photos
  28. Install car seat
  29. Clean bathroom drains
  30. Dust wall art/photos
  31. Clean out the car
  32. Clean the pram if not new
  33. Set up your co-sleeper crib
  34. Organise your wardrobe
  35. Sort the shoe cupboard
  36. Clean windows
  37. Antibac bannister
  38. Descale shower head
  39. Write out a birth plan
  40. Batch cook + freeze meals
  41. Stock up on your favourite snacks
  42. Clean out fridge/freezer
  43. Clean oven
  44. Clean microwave
  45. Create a budget for maternity leave
  46. Sort paperwork
  47. Get maternity photos done
  48. Get presents for siblings ‘from the baby’
  49. Pack hospital bags
  50. Fold baby’s clothes Marie Kondo style
  51. Buy medicine essentials for baby
  52. Create a postpartum care kit
  53. Sterilise bottles/dummies/breast pump
  54. Set up a baby changing box in the car for emergencies

Let me know what you get done whilst you’re nesting! I enjoyed this stage of pregnancy and I hope you all do too.

Remember there is no need for most of these tasks. If you’d prefer to spend the last stages of your pregnancy with your feet up in front of the television then I wouldn’t blame you!

How to Style your Baby Bump

Filed Under: FASHION, MATERNITY, MOTHERHOOD // January 1, 2021

By Caitylis

There are lots of struggles when you are pregnant, and one which I think most women deal with is how to style your baby bump. As soon as around week 12 hit me in both my pregnancies everything began to no longer fit, especially bottoms. I even tried the good old bobble trick but that only seems to work for a week or so too.

I kept a lot of my maternity clothes from my pregnancy with Theodore but suddenly came to realise I was heavily pregnant with him in November/December and with Zach I was heavily pregnant in May/June… So the clothes I had saved were not very season-appropriate.

I have a whole Pinterest board for maternity fashion ideas so if you’re still struggling on ideas of what to wear and feel cute in you should have a scroll through there!

You can see my bump week by week and the outfits I wore with Zach in my pregnancy highlight on Instagram.

Also remember, not everything has to actually be maternity clothes. Sometimes just bigger pieces will do.

Extra Long Vest Tops

In my pregnancy with Theodore I bought 4/5 of Primarks extra long simple vest tops, they were around £2 each and went to just above the knee. Pair them with some leggings and then throw any non-maternity top over. It means your bum is covered but you can still be stylish and wear the clothes you already own. I used to throw a nice woolly jumper over the tops in the winter months.

Leggings

Leggings were my best friend in Theodore’s pregnancy, but in Zach’s, it was far too hot and I stuck to dresses. I’ve never been a fan of the over the bump leggings/jeans so actually just stuck to my regular low cut leggings which fitted perfectly the whole pregnancy. I do personally rate the leggings from Love Leggings as they’re thick enough not to see the colour of your knickers underneath!

Because leggings are super stretchy and there is no zipper or button to do up like on jeans you’ll feel so much more comfortable and will be able to wear them your whole pregnancy.

Tie Round Your Waist

Wearing your boyfriend’s huge T-shirts will look super cute but I found they made my bump disappear and actually just made me look like I’d put weight on and rather than pregnant. Grab a cute cardigan or shirt and tie it either on the top of your bump or the bottom depending on how you feel.

It really helps define your bump and shouts “hey! I’m pregnant!” which I love. Also tying something around your waist will also help with covering up your bottom, so if you’re wearing leggings that are a little questionable on the see-through front then the tied round cardi or shirt will give your bum a little coverage.

Long Cardigans

A lifesaver if you’re pregnant in the winter months. Being pregnant raises your body temperature massively and you will find that you’re still sweating when it’s snowing. Long cardigans are perfect for keeping you stylish and preparing you for either cold or hot weathers.

I don’t see the point in investing in a maternity coat. You’ll most likely be too hot

pregnant

Skirts and Dresses

I love a body-hugging skirt or dress during pregnancy. When else do you feel comfortable wearing tighter pieces? (I know I never do!) I love bits like this during the later stage in pregnancy when your bump is so defined I love that it almost becomes this cute accessory you can base your outfit around.

Always remember that when your bump becomes noticeable its what peoples eyes will first divert too, before your face, shoes and boobs.

Styling your bump can be super fun and really doesn’t need to be a stressful experience. And just remember, you’re pregnant, you can wear whatever you bloody hell want and no one is allowed to judge! Comfort comes before anything else – if you want to live in joggers for 9 months then so be it, I definitely did for a long while with Zach’s pregnancy.

Why getting outdoors is good for you We’ve all Why getting outdoors is good for you

We’ve all had those days where everything is going wrong, we’re all shouting and feeling frustrated. The best piece of advice I ever received as a parent is in those times, get outside. There is something about everyone getting fresh air, and the physical space around you that helps calm any situation.

Here are some more benefits to getting outside (whether it’s a walk or just sitting in the garden)

🐞Lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and improves your mood.

🐞The fresh air also helps you sleep better

🐞Improves focus — Studies show that both adults and children who have difficulties focusing or controlling impulses are better able to concentrate after being in nature.

🐞Helps us heal quicker - patients who spent time outdoors during their recovery required fewer painkillers, had fewer complications and experienced shorter hospital stays.

🐞Tops up your vitamin D - Which is an important vitamin for overall health, as well as strong and healthy bones

🐞Improves your immune system - A study published in 2010 evaluated the effect of forest bathing on immune function. For a group of Japanese adults, a three-day trip to the forest increased the number of white blood cells in their blood. These levels of white blood cells stayed elevated for more than 30 days after their adventure in the woods!

🐞Fosters a better imagination and creativity in children

What are your favourite ways to enjoy being outside?

What a week it has been! Feels like the only time What a week it has been!

Feels like the only time i have completely relaxed has been when i have fallen asleepat night!

Work is super busy at the moment, and having just recived a payrise i feel under pressureto do well!

Add to that the fact that Tolani was poorly and the pressure of me feeling stressed about staying home with her!

And when i sent her off to nursery after a few days i felt guilty towards her for not letting her stay home!

The balance act of being a full time working mum is sometimes too much and i wish i could just get some time to be just me!

Coming from Sweden i am used to a better work/family life balance where both parents take the same amount of responsibility!

UK is so different!
As a matter of fact only 75.1% of mums work in the UK, which is 20% lower then dads working.

Whether you want to work or stay at home with your children, it should be your decision. NOT because you don't have a choice!

With nursery fees being crazy high its no wonder people can't afford it!
Ours were £2,000 when both kids were in full-time nursery 🤯

Do you work? If you do, how do you find the work/family life balance?

If you are a stay at home mum, is it by choice or could you just not afford to work?

It is easy to get swept up in the kids. Nursery, s It is easy to get swept up in the kids.
Nursery, school, homework, tantrums, playdates....

But you are more then "just a mum" and it is important to remember that!

It's fine to not be the same person as before, because let's face it we have been through something life changing as having a child.

But it's important to remember that we were all someone before we had children, and that someone is still inside you! We are all our own person and we have our own interests. Our own dreams! So remember who you are!

What makes you happy? What do you enjoy doing? What do you do for YOU?

When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to bre When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to breastfeed. I had enough new things to learn (and a traumatic birth on top) so we gave formula from the start. For the sake of my own mental health, it was a decision I felt strongly about throughout pregnancy because I knew I would obsess and feel broken if breastfeeding ‘failed’

With the formula shortage crisis currently going on in America, there are many unhelpful comments telling people to just breastfeed instead. Apart from the fact you can’t just suddenly start producing milk, there are many reasons why some one may choose to use formula

🍼 They are taking a medication incompatible with breastfeeding

🍼 Their milk supply simply wasn’t enough and couldn’t be improved

🍼 Their baby has severe allergies (CMPA)

🍼 They have adopted or used a surrogate

🍼 They are a trauma survivor and breastfeeding is triggering for them

🍼 They don’t feel comfortable breastfeeding in front of others

🍼 They actually pump and give that in a bottle so that they can rest and let others take a turn

🍼 Likewise they have chosen to combi-feed

Did you use formula for your baby? Let’s share our stories so others don’t feel afraid or ashamed to say they choose to use bottles
