50+ THINGS TO DO WHILST NESTING IN PREGNANCY

Filed Under: MATERNITY, PREGNANCY // January 3, 2021

NESTING IN PREGNANCY

Nesting, my absolute favourite part of both my pregnancies. The stage where your ‘mama bird’ kicks in and all you can think, breathe and do is sort, sort, sort! I found it usually kicked in for me around 30 weeks and probably lasted for about a month (or up until you don’t have the energy anymore!) in both my pregnancies. But boy was it more intense the second time around.

You can usually tell when a pregnant woman is nesting by the state of her home. If it’s looking exceptionally cleaner than usual, or perhaps a bit more organised or maybe you spot her doing the strangest jobs (like when brad caught me scrubbing every single radiator with a toothbrush).

It’s just this instinct that everything must be clean, organised and sorted before the new arrival. Because that Mama knows she ain’t going to have time to be scrubbing radiators for years soon.

So, if you feel like you’ve cleaned every-possible-thing you own, here’s an extra list of things you could do if you’re itching for a little more.

But mama, please rest!

  1. Strip the sofa cushions and wash them all
  2. Hoover under cushions and behind the sofa
  3. Wash any rugs
  4. Dust and clean blinds
  5. Clean radiators
  6. Wipe down skirting boards/coving
  7. Organise Tupperware
  8. Organise food cupboards
  9. Check dates on food produce
  10. Wash doormats
  11. Wipe down internal doors and handles
  12. Antibac light switches and sockets
  13. Declutter DVD’s and CD’s
  14. Sort older children’s toys
  15. Paint over any marked walls
  16. Wash baby’s clothes, blankets and bedding
  17. Wash any soft toys for baby
  18. Dust any light fittings
  19. Disinfect bin
  20. Deep clean washing machine
  21. Descale kettle
  22. Wipe down cupboard fronts in the kitchen
  23. Antibac remotes + keyboards
  24. Fill in a pregnancy journal
  25. Clean out under beds
  26. Organise nappy caddies for different rooms of the house
  27. Make memory on your phone/SD cards for photos
  28. Install car seat
  29. Clean bathroom drains
  30. Dust wall art/photos
  31. Clean out the car
  32. Clean the pram if not new
  33. Set up your co-sleeper crib
  34. Organise your wardrobe
  35. Sort the shoe cupboard
  36. Clean windows
  37. Antibac bannister
  38. Descale shower head
  39. Write out a birth plan
  40. Batch cook + freeze meals
  41. Stock up on your favourite snacks
  42. Clean out fridge/freezer
  43. Clean oven
  44. Clean microwave
  45. Create a budget for maternity leave
  46. Sort paperwork
  47. Get maternity photos done
  48. Get presents for siblings ‘from the baby’
  49. Pack hospital bags
  50. Fold baby’s clothes Marie Kondo style
  51. Buy medicine essentials for baby
  52. Create a postpartum care kit
  53. Sterilise bottles/dummies/breast pump
  54. Set up a baby changing box in the car for emergencies

Let me know what you get done whilst you’re nesting! I enjoyed this stage of pregnancy and I hope you all do too.

Remember there is no need for most of these tasks. If you’d prefer to spend the last stages of your pregnancy with your feet up in front of the television then I wouldn’t blame you!

Love this quote and picture @mrskindonandco posted the other day.

It reminded me that it’s ok to have days where I’m not my best self. There are days that are super hard to get through, and you’re just willing for it to be over. But those days pass.

Don’t be afraid to take a step back, gather your thoughts, regroup. Putting yourself first sometimes is what will help you flourish!

Why getting outdoors is good for you We’ve all Why getting outdoors is good for you

We’ve all had those days where everything is going wrong, we’re all shouting and feeling frustrated. The best piece of advice I ever received as a parent is in those times, get outside. There is something about everyone getting fresh air, and the physical space around you that helps calm any situation.

Here are some more benefits to getting outside (whether it’s a walk or just sitting in the garden)

🐞Lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and improves your mood.

🐞The fresh air also helps you sleep better

🐞Improves focus — Studies show that both adults and children who have difficulties focusing or controlling impulses are better able to concentrate after being in nature.

🐞Helps us heal quicker - patients who spent time outdoors during their recovery required fewer painkillers, had fewer complications and experienced shorter hospital stays.

🐞Tops up your vitamin D - Which is an important vitamin for overall health, as well as strong and healthy bones

🐞Improves your immune system - A study published in 2010 evaluated the effect of forest bathing on immune function. For a group of Japanese adults, a three-day trip to the forest increased the number of white blood cells in their blood. These levels of white blood cells stayed elevated for more than 30 days after their adventure in the woods!

🐞Fosters a better imagination and creativity in children

What are your favourite ways to enjoy being outside?
