HOW TO TAKE BETTER PHOTOS WITH YOUR PHONE

Filed Under: ENTERTAINMENT, LIFE // January 7, 2021

PHOTOS WITH YOUR PHONE

Want to know how to take better photos with your phone?! Did you know 95% of our Instagram and blog images are taken on our phones?! It’s just SO quick and easy and even though I have a very expensive camera that I paid a lot of money for (well, actually my student loan did, thank you government) I would much rather take my images with my phone these days.

There’s a lot of reasons behind that.

One being that especially for Instagram you don’t NEED a higher quality photograph than that from a phone. Your Instagram images are rarely ever blown up big. They are a small square or 4X5 image on a smartphone or tablet, and as long as you have great lighting and a steady hand those photos will always be good enough for the gram.

So if you’re like us and want to get better at using your phone to capture your images for your blog/insta, or perhaps you just want to know how to take better photos with it, then here are our best tips!

Turn on Grid Mode

This has to be my number 1 MUST. Not only does it give you a 3X3 grid which will help you massively with composition, it also gives you a little + in the middle when you are taking images above. PERFECT for flat lays. You just need to line up your yellow + with the central one and you will get a spot on over the head image. No more looking back over photos thinking they’ve been taken at funny angles.

To do this on an iPhone, go into your settings, scroll down to ‘camera’ and turn on ‘grid’.

Natural Lighting

If I learnt one thing from studying photography it’s that ambient lighting will ALWAYS be better than artificial. Photographing in a nicely lit room will not only make your photos a better quality but will make them easier to edit too. I’m not saying don’t use artificial lighting, because sometimes that can help. But your best thing is to open up your curtains and blinds wide and try photograph close to a window.

Use a Phone Tripod and Remote

I only recently got myself one of and boy has it changed how I photograph. You definitely need one of these if you take a lot of photographs of yourself. No more balancing your phone on a pile of books, setting self-timer for 10 seconds and waiting impatiently. Now your phone will sit comfortably and straight and you can hold the tiny Bluetooth remote and just keep constantly snapping. You’ll soon learn how to hold the remote so it’s not seen in images too. Though sometimes I forget and have to quickly edit it out on Lightroom. You can find the tripod and remote we have here (link).

Shoot Action Shots with Live Photos ON

This setting is a godsend with a crazy toddler. Once you’ve taken your image, click edit and then on the left ‘live photo’ icon. This will give 12 frames before and after you clicked the shutter, select one and click ‘Make Key Photo’. Meaning if someone has closed their eyes, moved their arms you can easily see if there is a suitable more focused less blurred image!

Use the Back Camera

The main camera on the back of your phone is of SO much higher quality than that of your selfie camera. I rarely use the selfie camera unless I’m just taking selfies for fun and NOT for Instagram/Blog. If you’re wanting to take a selfie to post then either use the tripod method above, or sit in front of a mirror, have the back camera pointing at you, and use the mirror to see what you look like.

I also use a little standing mirror when using my phone tripod! This way I can always see what I’m taking and how its framed instead of constantly having to go look at the previous image and see what needs changing.

Don’t Use Flash

As I said, it’s all about natural lighting. Artificial can be okay and work in your favour but the built-in flash on your phone is not going to improve the lighting situation.

Please Don’t Zoom

If you want to be closer up either stand closer OR crop the image after. Phone cameras aren’t built for zooming. It decreases the image quality massively. The lenses on these phones are nothing like a real camera lens, your lens isn’t actually zooming in, the phone is just stretching what it already see.

So many times I’ve gone to take a photo and thought “why is it all misty?” usually because I’ve gotten some kind of substance (food) over my lens. I find this happens a lot too with using beauty products or hair spray. Give your lens a nice little wipe over with something clean and dry and you will notice a huge difference in image quality.

Let me know if these tips have helped you at all! I’d love to see if they’ve improved your photos at all. If you try these out and post to Instagram be sure to tag me (@caitylis) so I can see! I’d love to see your images!

Thanks for sharing! I don’t usually use gridlines, I don’t know why I havent thought about that. Nice ideas 😀

I definitely need to try the grid mode – why didn’t I think about that before. It will be a gamechanger for photography. I also find the live mode really useful as well. These are great tips!

My partner always asks why I have grid mode on because he hates it, but it’s so helpful for framing! My photos are so much better for it

Live photos on the iPhone are my favourite feature! Sometimes the image it picks isn’t the best one or sometimes you miss the shot you want… but there it is! And I’ve never turned on the grid feature, but what a good idea!

Love these tips! Grids are a must and after snapping a lot of pictures a tripod comes truly handy! The front camera never had the same quality as the back one for some reason, hopefully will improve! Thank you for sharing them x

I don’t use the grid option myself but I’ll have to try it! I usually only do flatlays so it should help. Thanks for the tips!

I still have to get used to grid mode to be honest, I definitely see how it can help, but I now struggle with the fact that the lines distract me from the actual photo as a whole. It’s just a thing I have to get used to though. Thank you for sharing these tips though, I should really focus more on things like this!

Why getting outdoors is good for you We’ve all Why getting outdoors is good for you

We’ve all had those days where everything is going wrong, we’re all shouting and feeling frustrated. The best piece of advice I ever received as a parent is in those times, get outside. There is something about everyone getting fresh air, and the physical space around you that helps calm any situation.

Here are some more benefits to getting outside (whether it’s a walk or just sitting in the garden)

🐞Lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and improves your mood.

🐞The fresh air also helps you sleep better

🐞Improves focus — Studies show that both adults and children who have difficulties focusing or controlling impulses are better able to concentrate after being in nature.

🐞Helps us heal quicker - patients who spent time outdoors during their recovery required fewer painkillers, had fewer complications and experienced shorter hospital stays.

🐞Tops up your vitamin D - Which is an important vitamin for overall health, as well as strong and healthy bones

🐞Improves your immune system - A study published in 2010 evaluated the effect of forest bathing on immune function. For a group of Japanese adults, a three-day trip to the forest increased the number of white blood cells in their blood. These levels of white blood cells stayed elevated for more than 30 days after their adventure in the woods!

🐞Fosters a better imagination and creativity in children

What are your favourite ways to enjoy being outside?

What a week it has been! Feels like the only time What a week it has been!

Feels like the only time i have completely relaxed has been when i have fallen asleepat night!

Work is super busy at the moment, and having just recived a payrise i feel under pressureto do well!

Add to that the fact that Tolani was poorly and the pressure of me feeling stressed about staying home with her!

And when i sent her off to nursery after a few days i felt guilty towards her for not letting her stay home!

The balance act of being a full time working mum is sometimes too much and i wish i could just get some time to be just me!

Coming from Sweden i am used to a better work/family life balance where both parents take the same amount of responsibility!

UK is so different!
As a matter of fact only 75.1% of mums work in the UK, which is 20% lower then dads working.

Whether you want to work or stay at home with your children, it should be your decision. NOT because you don't have a choice!

With nursery fees being crazy high its no wonder people can't afford it!
Ours were £2,000 when both kids were in full-time nursery 🤯

Do you work? If you do, how do you find the work/family life balance?

If you are a stay at home mum, is it by choice or could you just not afford to work?

It is easy to get swept up in the kids. Nursery, s It is easy to get swept up in the kids.
Nursery, school, homework, tantrums, playdates....

But you are more then "just a mum" and it is important to remember that!

It's fine to not be the same person as before, because let's face it we have been through something life changing as having a child.

But it's important to remember that we were all someone before we had children, and that someone is still inside you! We are all our own person and we have our own interests. Our own dreams! So remember who you are!

What makes you happy? What do you enjoy doing? What do you do for YOU?

When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to bre When I had my eldest I simply didn’t want to breastfeed. I had enough new things to learn (and a traumatic birth on top) so we gave formula from the start. For the sake of my own mental health, it was a decision I felt strongly about throughout pregnancy because I knew I would obsess and feel broken if breastfeeding ‘failed’

With the formula shortage crisis currently going on in America, there are many unhelpful comments telling people to just breastfeed instead. Apart from the fact you can’t just suddenly start producing milk, there are many reasons why some one may choose to use formula

🍼 They are taking a medication incompatible with breastfeeding

🍼 Their milk supply simply wasn’t enough and couldn’t be improved

🍼 Their baby has severe allergies (CMPA)

🍼 They have adopted or used a surrogate

🍼 They are a trauma survivor and breastfeeding is triggering for them

🍼 They don’t feel comfortable breastfeeding in front of others

🍼 They actually pump and give that in a bottle so that they can rest and let others take a turn

🍼 Likewise they have chosen to combi-feed

Did you use formula for your baby? Let’s share our stories so others don’t feel afraid or ashamed to say they choose to use bottles
