Old houses have character and history, but their interiors can eventually become dull when you fail to modernise or tastefully display the decor to suit your style.
Considering that 1 in 6 UK homes were constructed before 1900, there is a high chance that you will live in one. However, that shouldn’t be a problem as it allows you to explore your creativity and achieve a new or modern look for your living space. Below are a few ways to give your old house a modern touch.
- Change the existing focal point of a room
When you look around your interiors, whether it’s the living room or bedroom, what identifies as the major focal point? They can be large furniture, life-sized artwork on the wall, or even a window with a great view. In interior decor, a major focal point easily draws attention in a specific direction. It also complements the overall theme of the room(s) in question. After a while, however, you may get tired of the same old look and want to change things up a bit.
That is when you can play around with your furniture, central art piece, or the existing focal point in the room. For example, you can move the artwork in the living room to another part of the house, preferably the bedroom, to create a new look. You can also rearrange your living room furniture to make the fireplace the new focal point. In this case, you don’t need to discard existing items because all it takes is to swap things around. By changing the focal points, you would have created a new look for your old house.
- Change the upholstery
The eyes tire out easily after seeing the same old thing repeatedly. That is particularly true with your sofas, chairs, general seating items, and some decorative pieces. After years of usage, the outer fabric and the padding underneath the upholstery may lose appeal. Fortunately, you can change these things to meet your needs for a change in decor style. So whether you’re embarking on a DIY project or hiring an interior decor contractor, you can find quality upholstery supplies that last longer. The idea is to create comfortable and attractive outer coverings for your furniture. Thankfully, these upholstery fabrics come in a wide variety, making the selection of a new theme to complement your home easy. With some decor experience, you can purchase different fabrics to create a customised look for your home’s furniture.
- Rethink the fireplace
Many UK houses were built over a century ago, so your fireplace may require a little touch-up to complement the space. If yours is an old red brick fireplace, how about painting it to a refreshing colour like deep-navy or white? A white shade will open up your space and make it appear larger than it is. Meanwhile, a deep navy hue for your fireplace will add a new vibrant tone that isn’t too loud or be easily overlooked. In some old homes, the fireplaces are non-functional, but owners keep them all the same to create that loved traditional look.If this is you, filling it with a small electric warmer would be a great idea to better use the space. This step only applies if the dedicated fireplace can contain a small electric warmer with embedded LED lights. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to re-tile the external parts of the fireplace to give it a modern appeal.
Paying attention to the little elements can make all the difference in your quest to make your old house look new.
