Sustainability is the buzzword of the last five years or so, especially with the growing concerns of climate change still prominent in its urgency for action.
It’s important that we’re doing everything as current generations, to be more sustainable and to ensure the earth keeps spinning for many more future generations to come.
With that in mind, anything you do as a family household can make a big difference to the environment around you as well as the huge global effort that needs to be made. Here are some tips to be more sustainable as a family in 2023.
Buy less plastic
Plastic is quite possibly one of the worst purchases you can make, regardless of what form it comes in. From plastic bottles to packaging and toys for your children, the more plastic you have in your home, the more you’re contributing to the impact this material has on the world.
Plastic takes years to break down and it also releases some harmful gases into the atmosphere. There are plenty of businesses nowadays though who are trying to use recycled plastic for their products or finding alternative, bio-degradable options.
By buying less plastic, you’re going to help contribute positively to sustainability, so make sure you’re being conscious of how much plastic you have in your home.
Shop for refurbished appliances over buying new
While it’s nice to have a new appliance in your home that’s new and shiny, it’s another blow to sustainability. Why? Well because that new product requires new man-made materials, for the most part, to be made, manufactured, and then distributed to the relevant retailer you bought it from.
For those items you order online, the shipping of those items to your front door is an additional waste of energy that contributes to your household’s carbon footprint. To help be more sustainable, you may find that refurbished appliances are just as effective as brand-new appliances.
Use the shower more than your bath
While many people might like to take a relaxing bath at the end of the long day, the amount of water you’re using every week is likely to be huge. Not only is this impacting water usage and availability in your local area, but it’s also putting some extra charges into your gas bills.
Instead of taking baths, try to take more showers instead. Showers use up a fraction of the water you’d use in a bath, so it’ll help save money.
Donate to charity
If you’ve got anything that you no longer want, avoid chucking it out. This will only add to the landfills. Instead, donate to charities that need the clothing, toys, and other items you may have that can go to more homes for use.
Recycle all of your waste efficiently
Finally, make sure you recycle all of your waste efficiently. There are plenty of avenues to go down in order to recycle and reuse as much of the waste in your home as possible.
With these tips, you’ll make positive steps to a more sustainable household in 2023.
